As autumn begins, we're delighted to welcome three excellent bands to our regular Sunday Night Brass series at Boarshurst Band Club. From one of the world's oldest brass bands to local favourites with rich histories of their own, September promises three evenings celebrating the very best of the brass band tradition.

Whether you're a seasoned supporter or a first-time visitor, you'll find a warm welcome, great company, and some outstanding live music.

Sunday 6 September – Stalybridge Old Band

We begin the month with Stalybridge Old Band, a name that holds a very special place in brass band history. Founded in 1809, Stalybridge proudly lays claim to being the world's oldest brass band, with a continuous history stretching back more than two centuries.

Over the years the band has enjoyed success at major contests throughout the UK, including National Championship victories and multiple Gold Medal awards at the World Music Festival in Kerkrade, Holland.

With such a remarkable heritage, audiences can expect a programme combining traditional brass favourites, musical craftsmanship and the unique character that comes from over 200 years of banding experience.

Sunday 20 September – Boarshurst Band

The spotlight then turns to our own Boarshurst Band, a cornerstone of Saddleworth's musical life since 1849, making it one of the oldest established brass bands in the country.

From its origins rehearsing in village lofts and under railway arches, the band has grown into an organisation at the heart of the local community, with the Boarshurst Band Club itself becoming one of the region's best-known homes of brass music.

Today the band continues to perform extensively in concerts and contests while championing live brass music through its regular concert programme and support for visiting bands. A home performance is always a special occasion, and this will be a wonderful opportunity to hear the band in familiar surroundings.

Sunday 27 September – Milnrow Band

Closing the month is the highly regarded Milnrow Band, formed in 1869 and currently one of the North West's most successful brass bands.

The band has enjoyed a particularly impressive modern era, earning promotion to the Championship Section and establishing itself among the country's leading contesting bands. Their honours include victories at the Grand Shield, Senior Trophy, and All England International Masters, alongside appearances at National Finals.

Despite competing at the highest level, Milnrow remains firmly rooted in its local community and is known for delivering entertaining concerts packed with musical quality, energy and style. This promises to be a fitting finale to September's programme.
